What the transfer switch actually does
When utility power drops, the automatic transfer switch senses it, opens the connection to the grid, and closes the connection to the generator — then reverses the moment the utility returns. That first step, isolating the home from the utility line, is the whole point: it prevents the generator from sending power back onto the grid, which can kill a lineman working to restore service and damage your wiring. A generator without one is a hazard, not a shortcut.
How a proper transfer-switch install is built
We confirm whether you need an automatic switch (for a standby unit that starts itself) or a manual switch or interlock (common with a portable), size it to the circuits being backed up, and wire it between the utility feed and the panel so the home can never be connected to both sources at once. The work is pulled under a local electrical permit and inspected, because the inspection is what verifies the back-feed protection is really there.
